North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA)
The North American Retail Hardware Association has its roots in 1900 when a group of hardware merchants decided to band together as a way to gain influence among wholesalers and manufacturers. It produced its first newsletter in 1901, which evolved into what is today the Hardware Retailing magazine. As the home improvement industry in the U.S. grew and changed, so did the association. Today, it has approximately 13,000 members, employs a staff of 30 and is run by a board of directors made up of independent retailers. What hasn't changed much, however, it its core mission, which is "to help hardware store, home improvement centers and lumberyards in the U.S. and Canada become better, more profitable merchants." NRHA supports the independent retailer by providing the industry's leading nationwide trade journal that combines business feature articles, trends, new product information and news in one monthly publication, Hardware Retailing. NRHA also provides employee education services to its members in the form of online courses covering product knowledge and loss prevention. Every year, it conducts an annual convention, now held concurrently with the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas. NRHA also conducts industry research and recently formed its Vendor Partner Program as a way to improve communication between the independent retailer and the manufacturing community. This year, it launched a consumer marketing initiative called PlanItDIY as a way to raise awareness and attract more attention from the general public to the independent home improvement community.
